Dodenherdenking, vrijdag 4 mei. We zitten op de bank, mijn zoon van acht en ik. In afwachting van de twee minuten stilte kijken we naar de plechtigheden op de Dam. "Waarom moeten we twee minuten stil zijn voor iets wat al zo lang geleden gebeurd is?" vraagt hij. Ik vertel hem dat het vooral bedoeld is om tot ons door te laten dringen dat zoiets nooit meer mag gebeuren. "Maar er is nu toch geen oorlog meer?" zegt hij dan. "Nee, inderdaad, maar toch is het goed om even twee minuten te voelen dat zoiets niet meer kan gebeuren als we dat met z'n allen niet meer willen." Terwijl ik mijn spontane antwoord even overdenk, knikt hij en zwijgend kijken we verder naar de donker geklede mannen en vrouwen die kransen leggen bij het monument..
